The key areas of civil engineering services
You might be familiar with the term civil and structual engineering, but you might not necessarily know what it is they do. That’s why we’ve put together this quick guide to the key areas of work for a civil engineer. Hopefully this will give you a better idea of what they do, how they work and why they might be useful.
If we were to say that the most important British civil engineers from the past include Isambard Kingdom Brunel and Joseph Bazalgette, you might get a clue as to why they are so important. In short, civil engineers devise solutions to the problems faced by society in order to create a better, safer and more convenient world for all of us. For Brunel, this involved building bridges and railways. For Bazalgette, devising a sewer system that would enable London to clean itself of waste products on a daily basis.
Today’s civil engineering services heroes are more concerned with creating jaw-dropping buildings such as the Shard or China’s Jiaozhou Bay Bridge. But the everyday task of the civil engineer is still to solve more localised problems. This can involve everything from drainage to roads, car parks and residential spaces.
Civil engineers need to battle the big questions that face us today, including increasing population, environmental factors and a need to use materials that are less damaging to the world around us. As you can imagine, this is a complex task that involves a great deal of skill and knowledge. The same principles apply at both a small and large scale. This is why any civil engineering project is complex and requires an experienced team to be delivered on spec and on budget.
Those are the main aims of our team here at APEC. If you would like to know more about what we do, the projects we have worked on and what we might be able to do to help you realise your ambitions, then get in touch with a member of our team on 01379 673 024 We work across Norfolk and are experienced in a large number of civil engineering areas.
